All About Oklahoma City...
|
Oklahoma City is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma City was founded during the land run of 1889, first of five land runs in what became Oklahoma. Oklahoma City was settled on April 22, 1889, when the area known as the "unassigned lands" was opened for settlement. Some 10,000 homesteaders settled what is now downtown Oklahoma City, creating a tent city in a single day. Oklahoma City was the site of the bombing on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, the largest act of terrorism on American soil prior to the September 11th attacks and the most destructive act of domestic terrorism in American history. The city is also characterized by its location in America's Tornado Alley, which is frequently visited in the springtime by violent thunderstorms producing damaging winds, very large hail and tornadoes.
